Zoos of course are ideal especially at feeding time, although a zoom lens is needed on most occasions unless you are able to get quite close. Make sure you get as much of the subject in the viewfinder cutting out anything that might be distracting.
In the country side small mammals like squirrels can get quite close to be photographed as can waterfowl like ducks and swans etc.
Close ups of butterflies or spiders webs can be got as well. The latter look good with the morning dew on or frost. Wait for your moment when the animal looks towards you or gets in a position that helps to compose your photograph.
