Here the polarising filter really comes into its own when taking water shots. It greatly reduces reflection and enriches the colours of water and sky. Using a circular polariser allows you to adjust by rotating it to how much of the reflection you want to remove. Using coloured filters will also give some dramatic results, especially with a partly cloudy sky.
Different times of the day will make quite a difference to the colours and effects you will get on your photos. It is always best to avoid the mid-day sun and wait and take them in the morning or late afternoon. The different light will quickly change the mood of the scene.
