Landscape Photography

To take good landscapes you will need a small aperture to get the depth of field you will need to keep all the detail in focus. This will probably mean a slower than normal shutter speed which of course could create camera shake when taking the shot. It's always a good idea to have with you a tripod to prevent this happening. The ideal lens to use would be a 28mm wide angle.

Filters are useful when taking landscapes especially polariser's which reduce glare on water and intensify colours. Neutral density filters will reduce the amount of light entering the lens enabling the use of a slow shutter speed, especially useful when taking waterfalls or running water to give a sense of movement.

Wide angle lenses are best on landscapes to give a feel of expanse. They also help in the composition making sure some detail is in the foreground, mid-ground and background. Move the camera up and down whilst looking through the viewfinder to find the best position for the scene. Get an object like a rock or a tree in the foreground to the left or right of the picture to set up your scene for the distant view.

Try to create a path or curve of detail in the picture that will take the eye through to the main point of interest.

Best effects with lighting is not to shoot mid day when the light is harsh but early morning or evening when the light takes on softer and more mellow colours.
